Engineering Folder Structure

• There are a number of structures that engineering folders can take. The first sample outlines the structure for project startup, design, planning, contract, procurement, health & safety, technical, QAQC, and compliance.
• According to Hicks et al., (figure 1) files can be saved in a drive with up to 3-4 tiers of folders and sub-folders.
• In this sample, there is a folder for admin, clients, finance, and products.

Best Practices for Folder Structure

• Do not store files on the desktop.
• Be minimalist when creating folders.
• Give strategic names to your files and folders. Consider using dates, company name and type of document especially when saving a bill.
• Create tags and labels for your files to find information faster.
