Carbon-Neutral Toilet Paper

Goals

To identify whether there are any carbon-neutral toilet papers in the world in order to inform an internal strategy and product development. Additional preferences are to avoid product websites’ claims and focus on independent/objective sources in claims about a brand’s carbon-neutral status.

Early Findings

While efforts were made to rely on solely independent sources of identifying a brand’s carbon neutrality, in this initial hour of research not many of these types of sources were identified although the team checked through advocacy sources like Australia’s Carbon Neutral organization and Treesponsibility which appears to grant carbon neutral status. Still, neither of these advocacy organizations offered information on toilet tissues. What was available were product descriptions in catalogs and blog style reviews. The following toilet paper brands were noted to be carbon-neutral:
  • Pure Planet toilet tissue was noted to use a carbon-neutral carrier.
  • Ecoleaf Recycled Paper Toilet Tissue reports having received a “carbon-neutral status” from Treesponsibility due to planting trees to offset its carbon footprint.
  • Tree Zero is reported to be carbon-neutral due to offsetting the carbon dioxide produced during harvesting by removing the same amount from the atmosphere “in other ways.”
In addition to this public search, we scanned our proprietary research database of over 1 million sources and were unable to find any specific research reports that address your goals.
