Chronic Health Condition Consumers

  • Based on Deloitte's survey of how consumers manage their health, customers can be classified into four segments.
  • The four segments where these consumers belong are the following: trailblazers, prospectors, homesteaders, and bystanders.
  • Trailblazer consumers are those that are technologically-inclined, self-led, highly interested in wellness matters, and are fine with sharing information.
  • Prospectors are those that typically depend on advice from friends and family members, are comfortable trusting their providers, and are amenable to using technology.
  • Meanwhile, the bystander types of consumers are normally complacent, shun the use of technology, adverse to change, and not fully committed.
  • Based on the survey, the distribution of these consumers are the following: homesteaders - 40%; prospectors - 30%; trailblazers - 16%; and bystanders - 14%.
  • Trailblazers are usually composed of the youngest groups of consumers.
  • They are also the highest earners.
  • There are more male than female consumers in this group.
  • This group also tend to be the most healthy.
  • As for the bystanders, they are the oldest group.
  • They are also the lowest-earning group.
  • Women outnumbered men in this group.
  • This group tends to be the most unhealthy.
  • The prospectors are composed of the second youngest group of people.
  • They are also the second highest earning group.
  • Both men and women are equally represented in this group.
  • For the homesteaders, they are the second oldest segment and the second lowest income group.
  • There are more females than males in this group.
  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) forecasts that removing risk factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and cigarette consumption could enable individuals to avoid 80% of heart ailments and stroke, 80% of type 2 diabetes, and 40% of cancers.
