Number of Companies Generating $50M+ Revenue Annually - US, UK, and Canada

Goals

To have the number of companies, separately, in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom that generate $50M+ in revenue annually. The revenue is not of interest. Only the number of companies in each country.

Early Findings

United States

  • There is no publicly available data that will provide the answer for the question. The issue is that private companies are not required by law to reveal their revenues, or any financial data. If we do not know if they make over $50M+ in revenue, this makes the question unanswerable in the public domain.
  • We did come across two paywalled sources. Here, and here.
  • We came across this source which confirmed our findings. Even seasoned programmers can't determine this data.
  • For public companies, the government only has data for 2013. This would not provide an up to date picture, nor would it answer the full question.
  • This source only provides the distribution of economic data by enterprise size and industry, and the latest data is from 2016.
  • This source only covers public companies, and the revenue bucket does not match the one provided. The range needed it in this one: 10,000,000 – 99,999,999, which does not come near to the revenue bucket required for this question which is $50M plus.

Summary Of Our Early Findings Relevant To The Goals

  • Our initial hour of research was spent entirely on the United States. We exhaustively looked at every source we could that would bring us close to providing an answer to the question, but it is fruitless in the public domain.
  • We provided two paid sources should that want to be explored.
  • We are not suggesting further research down this avenue.
  • We have no way of knowing if Canada and the United Kingdom will provide the same results, but that is likely. We did find this source for Canada that provides the number of SMEs in Canada, but this data appears not to be broken down by revenue bucket. To make things grimmer, the data is from 2014.
  • Because respected thought leader, Gartner, defines SMBs by the number of employees and annual revenue they have, we have pivoted the research. The attribute used most often is number of employee, which does not suit the research. The second most popular attribute used to define the SMB market is annual revenue: small business is usually defined as organizations with less than $50 million in annual revenue; midsize enterprise is defined as organizations that make more than $50 million, but less than $1 billion in annual revenue. We have based our research proposal on this fact.
