Mortgage Origination Distribution

Goals

Provide a breakdown of mortgage originations by lender type, depository bank vs. non-bank (mortgage broker). Provide the trends over time and a breakdown by state, if available.

Early Findings

  • In the attached spreadsheet, we compiled figures for the distribution of bank and non-bank mortgage originations from 2008 to 2017 (the most recent year available).
  • The figures in the spreadsheet are approximate, but give a sense of the trends over time, which show a fairly dramatic increase in nonbank originations and a decrease in bank originations over the last ten years.
  • All reported data is from this FDIC report.
