Crime Prevention in Central America

Goals

To gain a better understanding of the breakdowns in policing in Central America and further identify potential crime prevention systems and technologies for lowering crime in the region. The information will inform the process of designing an affordable and durable, mobile security surveillance cameras for poor, violent neighborhoods in Central America. 

Early Findings

CRIME PREVENTION TECHNIQUES
Crime is a grave problem in Belize as the country has a high murder rate.
The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry Initiative will partner with BTL to improve the security of its residents by deploying "a network of surveillance and public security camera systems."
In Costa Rica, people are advised to install security cameras to prevent burglary.
The US Department of state has given a drone surveillance platform to the Guatemalan police force.
The drone costs around $75,000.
Honduras' police personnel were also trained to know more about digital surveillance techniques to deter crimes.
Technological advancements are also seen to improve law enforcement and crime prevention. 
"Big data analytics – including COMPSTAT-style data monitoring"systems, predictive policing, gunshot detection systems, together with body-worn cameras" are
 transforming police work in the Americas.
Globally, the city government and security authorities can improve their crime detection and prevention actions by having access from real-time data from "crime-mapping platforms, gunshot-detection systems, CCTVs or smart lights.
