Research Outline

STD Testing on Dating Apps

Goals

To identify 2-3 case studies of dating apps that successfully implemented STD verification into their platform.

Early Findings

NeatClub (Havn)

  • NeatClub is a dating app whose members "love having sex but want to be safe and reduce the risk of getting infected by a sexually transmitted disease."
  • It is mandatory for all members of NeatClub to undergo STD tests and verification every four months.
  • Once a user is verified to be free of STD, that user gets "tagged with an icon of a glass of "neat" whiskey."
  • Users can only chat with a person whose STD status is verified.
  • Currently, only people whose STD test results are negative can use the site.
  • The dating app provides a way to "fetch STD test results of chronic/lifelong STDs directly from healthcare provider or lab and store it on the app".
  • If a user wants to access his/her last test results directly on the app, they simply need to fill out a 2-minute form within the app as soon as the results are back.
  • The following test results can be accessed from the app: "HIV 1/2, Herpes-1, Herpes-2, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C test results".
  • NeatClub makes it simple and easy to exchange test results that can be trusted.
  • Ashka Shah is the founder and designer of NeatClub. The app is now operating under a new name, Havn.
