US Fleet Distribution

Goals

To determine the distribution of US fleet vehicles by fleet size and industry segment in order to understand the market for customer targeting.

Early Findings

This research qualified a fleet based on the following criteria: (1) "a business must have purchased five vehicles in a year or have 15 total units in operation", and (2) "all commercial entities with fewer than 15 vehicles in operation are considered non-fleet."

US Vehicle Fleet Size by Industry Segment

1. Commercial vehicles

  • Cars: 431,000 leased + 204,000 owned = 635,000 in total
  • Trucks: 727,000 leased + 1,860,000 owned = 2,587,000 in total
  • Total fleet size of commercial vehicles = total cars in fleet + total trucks in fleet = 635,000 + 2,587,000 = 3,222,000
  • Total fleet size of leased commercial vehicles = total leased cars in fleet + total leased trucks in fleet = 431,000 + 727,000 = 1,158,000
  • Total fleet size of owned commercial vehicles = total owned cars in fleet + total owned trucks in fleet = 204,000 + 1,860,000 = 2,064,000

2. Government vehicles

  • Cars: 22,000 leased + 1,195,000 owned = 1,217,000 in total
  • Trucks: 48,000 leased + 1,730,000 owned = 1,778,000 in total
  • Total fleet size of government vehicles = total cars in fleet + total trucks in fleet = 1,217,000 + 1,778,000 = 2,995,000
  • Total fleet size of leased government vehicles = total leased cars in fleet + total leased trucks in fleet = 22,000 + 48,000 = 70,000
  • Total fleet size of owned government vehicles = total owned cars in fleet + total owned trucks in fleet = 1,195,000 + 1,730,000 = 2,925,000

3. Rental

4. Taxi

5. Police

  • Cars: 440,800
  • Trucks: 77,400
  • Total fleet size of police vehicles = total cars in fleet + total trucks in fleet = 440,800 + 77,400 = 518,200

Research Strategy

We were able to determine the US vehicle fleet size by industry segment in this initial hour research. The data related to the fleet size of commercial, government, and rental vehicles are as of 2019. However, the data related to the fleet size of police and taxi vehicles are as of 2016 because the US Department of Transportation mentioned that the sourcing of police and taxi data after 2016 couldn't be done. There were no sources found in this initial one hour research other than these that could have helped to find the police and taxi data for recent years. Therefore, we've included the 2016 police and taxi fleet details in the research above.

Summary of the Initial Findings

We were able to provide the US vehicle fleet size by industry segment in the research above. However, we were not able to cover US vehicle fleet size by the number of vehicles in this initial hour research.
