My client and I are working to understand the opportunity to sell mattresses into on-campus dormitories across the United States. We are looking to understand the market opportunity today, the new development processes, the ongoing management of dorms, the buying process, and parties who get involved in selecting and buying dorm room fixtures (including mattresses, and the competitor landscape.

Early Findings

  • As of the 2017-2018 school year, there were 4,298 degree-granting postsecondary institutions (colleges and universities) in the US. Of these institutions 1,626 were public colleges, 1,687 were private nonprofit schools and 985 for-profit schools.
  • This article shows 100 colleges and universities with the highest percentage of students living in college-owned, operated and affiliated housing.
  • While this is a blog post, it gives an estimation of the number of students living on campus in 2016. The author is an associate professor at Seton Hall University and estimates that 15.6% of college students live on campus.
