To find 2-3 trends that describe how small fashion brands can make use of social media and social media influencers in the development of their business.

Early Findings

User-Generated and Shoppable Content on Instagram and Facebook

  • Fashion brands are "taking steps to reduce the friction between the content they produce and the purchasing process." To reduce this friction, fashion brands are creating shoppable content on social media platforms, especially Facebook and Instagram.
  • Social media platforms, like Instagram and Facebook, are providing fashion brands with improved technology and new features to enable them "to seamlessly integrate the content and shopping experiences in creative new ways."
  • Both Facebook and Instagram are offering shoppable ads, such as shoppable TV. However, "many fashion brands are finding success by leveraging blog and user-generated content (UGC) on social media to drive audience engagement and create authentic click-and-shop experiences."
  • An example of these brands is Madewell. Having about 1 million Instagram followers, the fashion brand and retailer "consistently shares images of beautifully photographed products" and provides direct access to the product page for people who want to shop. "It’s the perfect combination of content and commerce."
  • Using Instagram, many brands provide a "direct opportunity for their customer to shop through their feed" by setting up a shop with Instagram.

    • "More and more brands support getting real on Instagram, which means fewer filters and more authenticity. People started treated fashion as a lifestyle, being body positive, taking care of themselves, and the environment. "

As our initial search only found one trend, we recommend continuing research to find 2-3 additional trends that describe how small fashion brands can make use of social media and social media influencers in the development of their business. For each, we will provide a brief explanation and 1-2 examples of small fashion brands or thought leaders that are implementing/discussing it.
We recommend further research to find 2-3 best practices surrounding social media marketing for small fashion brands. For each practice, we will explain what the best practice is, why it is considered best practice, how it could help small fashion brands with their social media marketing strategies, and 1-2 examples of brands or thought leaders applying or talking about it.
Alternatively, we could conduct further research to find 2-3 insights surrounding the social media consumption patterns of a typical fashion buyer. These insights may include, but not limited to, the platforms they are using the most, the time they spend on social media, and whether they shop their fashion online or in brick-and-mortar retailers. Additionally, to gain more insights into the typical fashion buyer, we could build their demographic and psychographic profiles. Demographics will include gender, age, average income, educational level, and marital status. If any demographic detail is not available, we will substitute it with other demographics such as race/ethnicity, location (urban/rural/suburban), religion, occupation types, or socioeconomic status. Psychographics will include habits, hobbies, spending habits, and values. If any psychographic detail is not available, we will substitute it with other psychographics such as consumer attitudes, affinities, emotions, likes, and dislikes.
