Goals

Determine the average annual miles traveled by fleet vehicles for each class (1-8) for the year 2018 or 2019.

Early Findings

Average Annual Miles of Fleet Vehicles

  • Based on the National Transportation Energy Data Book, there were around 3,669,000 fleet cars in 2018.
  • Around 34% of this figure are government vehicles, 49% are rentals, and 17% are commercial.
  • There were also around 4,958,000 fleet trucks that have less than 19,500 lbs. gross vehicle weight (GVW).
  • Around 38% of this were government vehicles, 10% rental and 52% commercial trucks.
  • The average annual miles that were covered by commercial fleet vehicles are the following: 21,168 miles for compact cars, 23,412 for intermediate cars, 23,340 for pickup trucks, 23,940 for minivans, 22,800 for SUVs, and 21,888 for full-sized vans.
  • Based on a survey, the average rental car lease was for 20 months (1.67 years) with around 51,550 miles, translating to around 30,868 miles per year.
  • Meanwhile, for vehicles in general, the average annual vehicle miles traveled for 2018 by major vehicle categories are the following:

Summary of Findings:

  • Our initial research provided the average vehicle miles that were traveled by each major vehicle category for the year 2018.
  • However, the vehicles were not classified for each class type number as only the major category descriptions were indicated in the public sources found.
