Singapore International School Selection

Goals

To further understand the reasons why parents transfer their children from one international school to another in Singapore and touchpoints that parents go through while researching international schools in Singapore.

Early Findings

Key selection criteria noted for selecting an international school include type of curriculum, school fees, school culture. admission requirements, facilities and extracurricular activities, subjects and languages offered, location, and class size. 

Type of Curriculum Curriculums at Singaporean International Schools typically blend international Baccalaureate ‘IB’ and International Primary Curriculum.
Schools may also offer either a focus on national curriculum or a hybrid curriculum. 
 National curriculum schools typically attempt to mirror the Singaporean education system so students can easily transition to public school if required.
 Hybrid curriculum schools offer dual curriculum which combines Singaporean curriculum with at least one form of international curriculum. 
FeesSome international schools may offer discounts for multiple students, which encourages selection for families with more than one child.
Given the high price of international schools, fee structures can also be a selection criteria, with some schools requiring up front payment prior to enrollment, and others offering more flexible options. 
School Culture & RequirementsSome international schools in Singapore offer scholarships and tuition support in order to have a more inclusive and diverse population.
Some international schools have strict dress codes and policies, whereas others are more relaxed. 
While only a few are required by law in Singapore, some international schools may require additional health exams and vaccinations.  
Some international schools may require approval from the Ministry of Education  to enroll students, and may have restrictions around children who are considered Singaporean citizens, restricting families of blended nationality from selecting these schools.
