To provide an analysis of the digital health coaching industry covering its market size, past and projected growth rate, number of users, major subcategories, and 2 - 3 examples of firms operating in each category.

Early Findings

  • In the US, the health coaching market is expected to reach $7.85 billion by 2022, growing at 5.4 percent per annum. The weight loss segment alone is expected to reach $1.05 billion by 2022.
  • According to a recent report by R2G, there are over 300,000 mHealth apps available globally. In addition, there are more than 2,000 digital apps dedicated to the treatment of diabetes alone. The market for digital diabetes management services alone is projected to grow to $1 billion by 2022.

Examples - Pain Management Apps

  • Kaia Health is a digital coaching app that specifically deals with chronic pain management. The service was founded in 2015 and has raised $26 million to date. Also, the service publicly announced that it reached 250,000 users in 2019.
  • Another notable example in the pain management space is Fern. The digital app promises to reduce "functional pain symptoms" without surgery or opioids. According to its website, Fern offers personalized exercise therapy, pain neuroscience education, and virtual health coaching. The service was founded in 2019.


Summary of Findings

In our initial hour of research, we were able to determine the size of digital health apps globally as well as the size of some of its major subsegments. We were also able to identify two notable examples of digital services operating in the pain management space. Our preliminary findings indicate that the term "digital health app" is often used interchangeably with "digital coaching health apps," therefore, we have provided market sizes that include both definitions.
