Beef Processing/Packing Market

Goals

To understand the competitive landscape in the beef processing/packing market beyond the big four (JBS, Cargill, Tyson and National Beef) and understand for each company what niches they are filling, their headquarters locations, their facility locations, their facility types, their distribution (direct-to-consumer, restaurants, etc.), how they source, their share of the market, ownership structure, and how long they have been in business.

Early Findings

The big four meatpackers (JBS, Cargill, Tyson and National Beef) operate 80% of the beef processing/packing market. This means that 20% of the market is owned by other beef processers/packers.
 American Food Groups in 2018 had 10 plants and focused on beef slaughter, boxed beef, beef further processing, and ground beef, among others.
 Greater Omaha Packing in 2018 had 1 plant and focused on "beef slaughter, boxed beef, beef further processing, ground beef, and portion control" among others.
 Caviness Beef Packers is located in Texas and has been in existence since 1962. In 2018, it had 2 plants and focused on beef slaughter, boxed beef, beef further processing, ground beef, and natural/organic beef, among others.
 Kenosha Beef International Ltd. (Birchwood Foods) had 3 plants in 2018 and focused on ground beef.
 Creekstone Farms Premium Beef LLC had 1 plant in 2018 and focused on beef slaughter, boxed beef, ground beef, and natural/organic beef, among others.
 Harris Ranch Beef Co. had 1 plant in 2018 and focused on beef slaughter, boxed beef, beef further processing, and ground beef, among others.
 Lopez Foods had 3 plants in 2018 and focused on beef further processing, ground beef, and fresh sausage.
 FPL Food LLC had 2 plants in 2018 and focused on beef slaughter, boxed beef, beef further processing, ground beef, among others.
 SYSCO Corp., Smithfield Foods Inc., Hormel Foods Corp., OSI Group LLC, and Keystone Foods LLC, are five examples of meat packers that also process other meat aside from beef.
Summary of FindingsDuring the initial hour of research, we focused on finding beef packers/processors.
We found information on the top meat packers and listed only those that focused only on beef. However, there are multiple meat packers that process a variety of meats that include beef and have provided 5 examples of such companies.
The time was too limited to list all the packers exclusively focused on beef.
