• An October 2020 report by IBIS World noted that the revenue for the Australian Clothing Retailing industry had been adjusted to decrease by 8.5% from the previous expected climb of 0.4% in 2019-20 because of COVID-19 related restrictions and poor consumer sentiment.
• According to the report, the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to affect sales volumes in 2020 through 2021. Consequently, many retailers are expected to provide heavy discounts on existing stock, which will erode industry profit. In this regard, industry revenue is anticipated to decrease an annualized rate of 1.1% over the next five years through 2020-21, to $16.5 billion.
• With many states lifting restriction on retail trade starting mid-May 2020, analysts expect that the move will help the industry to recover gradually, especially in consumer sentiment and shopping activity.
• Companies in the Australian Cllothing Retailing industry have witnessed a more dynamic operating environment since 2015. For instance, brick-and-motor retailers that adopted online channels led to an increase in online shopping activity; however, "weak growth in disposable incomes has reduced demand for industry products."
