Goals

To develop a comprehensive list of movies or television series (over the past five years or upcoming) which have focused on real-life stories filled with drama, crime, violence, power and the human condition around the globe. Documentaries and/or docu-series should be excluded from the list.

Early Findings

The Act

  • Hulu's first season of The Act featured the true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Gypsy's mother was murdered after being accused of abusing her daughter by fabricating illness and disabilities as a result of Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
  • "The stranger-than-fiction true-crime series is based on a 2016 BuzzFeed article that detailed the shocking 2015 crime."
  • The first season is rated an 8 out of 10 on IMDb and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes
  • The series was nominated for 13 awards and Patricia Arquette won both a Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Supporting Actress.

American Crime Story

  • American Crime Story is a FX anthology crime series. The first season featured the OJ Simpson murder trial, the second season detailed the murder of fashion legend Gianni Versace, and the upcoming season is set to present the Bill Clinton impeachment saga.
  • The combined ratings for the series are 8.4/10 on IMDb and 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Both seasons to date have won numerous awards, including for Best Limited Television Series, Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, and for Direction.

Dark Angel

  • Dark Angel aired in 2016 as a mini-series in Britain.
  • The miniseries tells the story of Britain's first female serial killer, Mary Ann Cotton.
  • IMDb rates this production as a 6.8 out of 10.

Delhi Crime

  • Originally aired in India, and featured at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Delhi Crime was picked up by Netflix in March 2019.
  • The series focuses on the aftermath in Delhi after a 2012 gang rape.
  • The series currently rates an 8.5/10 on IMDb.

Des

  • The British television network ITV has slated to air Des, a "drama based on material from the book Killing for Company by Brian Masters, which focuses on one of the most infamous cases in UK criminal history, that of serial killer Dennis Nilsen."
  • The series will star David Tennant, a former Doctor on the long-running show Dr. Who.
  • A November press announcement of the show did not provide a specific air date.
