Research Outline

Art Museum Proximity

Goals

To determine the number or proportion of individuals that live more than 1 mile from a large contemporary art museum in urban US, and 10 miles from a large contemporary art museum in rural US, so as to understand the total addressable market of a digital tool that teaches busy people about art.

Early Findings

Initial research indicates that data specific to large contemporary art museums is not available in the public domain. Hence, we have broadened the criteria to art museums (including small art museums and large non-contemporary museums). This is reflected in our findings and in the scoping options below.
  • 27.7% of specialized museums (non-general and non-historic) are located in rural areas.
  • There are 2,620 art museums in the US.
  • Los Angeles (31) and Chicago (30) have the most number of art museums in the US.
  • There are 7,429 art museums in the US, of which nearly three-quarters are located in urban areas.

Summary

  • Preliminary research suggests that there are no publicly available statistics specific to large art museums in the US.
  • However, we were able to obtain statistics on art museums from the Institute of Museum and Library Statistics.
  • Of the 2,620 art museums in the US, a large majority are located in urban areas.
