Early Findings

Our initial research suggests that the total number of SaaS tools or business software products in 2009 and in the current year is not available. 
What we found were some helpful statistics on the number of SaaS providers and the size of this market.

The available data points below can help provide a rough picture of the total number of SaaS tools especially for those companies that only provide one platform. 

CURRENT STATISTICSBased on available data, there are more than 50 publicly-traded SaaS firms that contribute to more than $225 billion in "aggregate market capitalization." 
The biggest SaaS platform providers include Salesforce, Workday, and ServiceNow.
Meanwhile, there are around 10,000 private SaaS companies as of 2017. Most of these private companies are still in the early stage, earning less than $3 million annually.
The SaaS market's total revenue reached $46 billion in 2017. It was seen to go up to $76 billion in 2020.

2009 SAAS STATISTICSIn 2009, there are around 18 public SaaS vendors. 
Most of these companies are still operating on a small-scale basis as most of them are earning only around $200 million in revenue. 
The SaaS market earned around $9 billion at this time and is seen to reach $19 billion in 2010 at a growth rate of 23%.
Based on revenue, the biggest SaaS players during this period are Dealertrack, Netsuite, and Salesforce.
There are no data found on the total number of private SaaS companies during this period.
