Research Outline

Global Semiotics of Hygiene During COVID-19

To find examples of semiotics of hygiene in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to inform a research paper for marketing communications. Specifically:
  • Identify how large-scale public venues alter their appearance/practices to reassure the public they are thoroughly clean/sanitized
  • Identify a list of examples/articles that show the steps large scale premises across the world, such as entertainment venues and offices, take to reassure the public, post-COVID, that their facilities are of the utmost hygiene standards.
  • Identify any lists of colours/shapes/actions that appear more hygienic to the general public.

Early Findings

Data Availability

The initial round of research indicates that data availability is adequate on this topic

Sports Arenas Using Drones to Disinfect Venues

  • In May 2021, the FAA approved a Pittsburgh-based drone company, AERAS Fog to deploy drones to disinfect and sanitize public venues.
  • The drone company was awarded a “137 certification for AERAS Drone Disinfectant Solutions” that allows it to “sanitize sports and entertainment venues such as stadiums or concert arenas against COVID and other viral pathogens.”
  • “AERAS is honored to be the first company to meet the FAA’s high standards to receive this certification to sanitize outdoor venues as we return to a new normal coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Eric Lloyd, CEO and co-founder of AERAS.
  • The baseball team — Atlanta Hawks also contracted with Lucid Drone Technologies to use their D1 Disinfecting Drone to sanitize its 17,500-seat State Farm Arena between events. The D1 disinfecting drone has a coverage of more than 150,000 square feet in an hour.

Examples of Steps Large Scale Premises Are Taking to Reassure the Public the Facilities are of the Utmost Hygiene Standards

1. Contract Workers Clean New York Subway System

  • Within the first hour, we have provided two examples of sports venues that have altered their practices to sanitize and disinfect sports venues using drones. We have also presented the steps the New York Subway System has taken to sanitize and disinfect the subway.
  • For a deeper dive into the semiotics of hygiene during COVID-19 based on the objectives outlined in the “goals” section, we recommend further research. Details on our recommended research paths have been provided in our proposals below.
  • For all our research, we would focus on the entire world.
