General Data into Addiction

Goals

To obtain general information about addiction (e.g. male vs female and what works and what doesn't when it comes to recovery).

Early Findings

Sex Addiction

Drug and Alcohol Addiction

  • Men are more susceptible to drugs and alcohol addiction compared to women and are influenced by groups or peer pressure while women tend to become dependent on substances at a faster rate and also self-medicate.
  • Men are twice more likely to engage in binge drinking and they are also the ones who are more inclined to think they aren't in need of treatment.
  • In terms of recovery, men tend "to "stabilize" substance abuse at lower doses than women" and also have intense symptoms relating to alcohol withdrawal. Women tend to have side effects of substance abuse which might include liver damage.
  • Women are more likely to relapse when compared with men.

Recovery strategies

  • Sex addicts are encouraged to get involved in support groups and networking in groups such as Sex Addicts Anonymous, and Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous.
  • Treatment for recovery can be gender-specific since there might be concerns for each gender.
  • Out of fear for risking one's employment, men might consider outpatient treatment, detox services, "a support group of similar peers", behavioral therapy and family therapy and counseling.
  • A full continuum of care is beneficial to both men and women and this encompasses "detox to residential treatment, partial hospitalization, outpatient services, and transitional living".
