Data Availability
There is plenty of available information in the public domain regarding how people spend their free time.
How People Spend Their Free Time
According to James Wallman, author of 'Time and How to Spend It,' American adults have around
36 to 40 hours
of leisure time or free time each week. This is in accord with the
Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2018 American Time Use Survey
which revealed that "men and women spend
5.7 and 4.9 hours
of time respectively on leisure activities each day." Leisure was defined "
as activities outside of work
, household chores, school, and religious activities. On average, "watching TV took up half of all
leisure time.
"
Wallman suggests that volunteering,
unplugging from digital devices
, learning new skills, and making new memories through experiences are some ways of using one's free time in order to have a happier and more meaningful life. These are also some ways that happier people spend their free time.
How Successful People Spend Their Free Time
Successful people spend their free time through meditation, physical exercise, reading, listening to podcasts, vacation, taking classes,
spending time with family and friends
, volunteering, and working on creative pursuits.
Successful people also spend their free time
strengthening their networks
by attending networking events. They also spend their free time at night planning their next day. This ensures that what they need to accomplish will be accomplished.
Successful people use their free time by pursuing their hobbies. For example, Richard Branson spends his free time playing chess with his kids on Necker Island, Jack Dorsey of Twitter spends his Saturday free time hiking, Bill Gates spends free time with Warren Buffet playing bridge, and Steve Wozniak spends time playing
Segway polo
.
Aside from that, they also never stop learning. That's why their free time is also used for learning new things as they read books, listen to podcasts, and
take classes.
Summary of Early Findings
We have provided some information on how people spend their free time. We have assumed a global view for this research. The examples are not specific to any geographic location. If a more targeted view is desired, for example, a US focus, this will have to be communicated to us in the reply.
