To provide a demographic and psychographic analysis of tourists who visit Denver, Colorado.

Early Findings

Insights on Visitors to Denver

  • The typical visitor to Denver is from out-of-state, specifically from the states of California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Arizona, and New York; and the cities of Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Houston, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Kansas City, Phoenix.
  • 81% of overnight visitors to Denver are from out-of-state.
  • Overnight visitors make up 55% (17.3 million/31 million x 100) of the visitors to Denver.

Profile of Colorado’s Overnight Leisure Visitors

The features of Colorado’s overnight leisure visitors include:
  • Age: averaging 43 years old.
  • Marital status: 6 in 10 are married.
  • Gender: skewed towards male.
  • Education: better educated, with two-thirds having a college degree.
  • Income: more affluent, with slightly higher household income.
  • Ethnicity: more often white/Caucasian, and less likely to be African-American or from other ethnic backgrounds.

Profile of People Taking Day Trips to or Within Colorado

The demographic profile of people taking day trips to or within Colorado include:
  • Age: average of 45 years old.
  • Marital status: a majority are married/living with a partner.
  • Gender: skewed towards male.
  • Income/Employment and Education: slightly more upscale in terms of employment status, education and income.
  • Ethnicity: more likely to be white/Caucasian, and less likely to be African-American.

Summary of Findings

In this hour of research, we were unable to find information on the demographic profile of visitors to Denver. However, we found and presented information on the demographic profile of visitors to the State of Colorado. We found that this information could be indicative of the profile of visitors to Denver because, "while travel and tourism is important throughout the state, half (50%) of all overnight travel spending occurs in the Denver Metro Region."
