Electric Truck Charging Times
Delivered February 6, 2020. Contributor: ChristineD
Goals
Determine the charging times of electric trcuks by charger type, truck size, truck type, or other classifications.
Early Findings
Electric Truck Charging Times
- For medium-duty trucks, these vehicles were normally charged overnight.
- Chargers for trucks were not standardized yet to "allow for interoperation
between different manufacturers of medium- (8,501 - 14,000 lbs. GVWR) and heavyduty (>14,000 lbs. GVWR) vehicles."
- Truck chargers are also categorized based on the amount of power that they can load to the battery pack.
- Level 1, 2, and 3 chargers transform AC power from the grid to DC power with the right level of voltage for loading the battery.
- DC fast chargers send DC power straight to the vehicle. In BEV applications, level 1 and level 2 chargers can
- be entirely installed within the vehicle.
- For Level 1 chargers, the charging time can range from 6-20 hours.
- For Level 2 chargers, the charging time can range from 3-8 hours.
- For the Level 3 chargers that are still being developed, the expected charging time is less than 0.5 hours.
- For DC Fast Charge, the the charging time is less than 0.5 hours.
