Goals

Identify how much Unsplash was sold to Getty Images for, as well as provide the breakdown of funding rounds for Unsplash prior to its acquisition.

Early Findings

  • Unsplash held three funding rounds. The first was a seed round in 2013 which raised an undisclosed amount. The second was a Series A round in 2018 which raised $10.3 million. The final round was a Series B round in August 2019 which raised $20 million. Therefore, Unsplash raised a total of at least $30.3 million.
  • Unsplash had a total of twelve investors, with the lead investor being OST. Other investors were Nitesh Banta, David Wieland, Bedrock Capital, Rahul Vohra, Betaworks, Accomplice, Roger Dickey, Real Ventures, and Clark Valberg.
  • Unsplash announced on March 30, 2021, that it was being acquired by Getty Images, but "will continue to operate as a standalone brand inside of Getty and that the free content model won’t be changing."
  • The specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, other than that it is "a cash deal that is set to close at the end of the month."
  • Talks between Getty Images and Unsplash have been ongoing since 2016.
