Research Outline

Iberostar Employee Communication Analysis

Goals

To gain an understanding of Iberostar Group's internal communication strategy. This research should be presented as a series of examples of what the company has communicated to employees and through which channels.

Early Findings

1: The Iberostar Family Site Employee Portal

  • Iberostar operates the Star Team Iberostar Family Site, which is an employee portal. It is assumed that a majority of internal communications are taking place in this portal, however, no further information could be obtained as there does not to be any other publicly available information about this portal on social media, YouTube, in trusted media reports, in employee reviews, case studies, etc. We also attempted to look for an annual report from the company which may have provided insight about the employee portal, however, as this is a private company no such report was found to be available,

2: Specialized Training, Press Releases, and Sinage About Hygiene Practices

  • Communication: The company recently had to communicate with employees regarding new hygiene practices in the wake of COVID-19 and the company's goal to reopen their resorts.
  • Channels: This communication was given in at least the following ways: via specialized training, via a press release, and in signage around the facilities.

3: Training and Reminders About Eco-Friendly Initiatives

  • Communication: A company wide-initiative (Wave-of-Change) was communicated to employees regarding ocean conservation and plastic use reduction.
  • Channels: The initiative was communicated to employees via training and by putting reminders on all internal staff communications.

4: Lawyers & Letters About Termination

  • Communication: In one publicized case, the company communicated to an employee that they were terminated after the employee was held on a very long suspension.
  • Channels: The communication in this case was conducted via letter and through lawyers (i.e. the company's lawyer communicating to the employee's lawyer).

Results of Initial Findings

  • Information about Iberostar's internal communication strategy is incredibly scarce within the public domain.
  • The scarcity of this information appears largely due to the following factors: 1) Iberostar is a privately held company and, as such, the majority of information regarding its internal operations has not been made public and 2) the company operates an employee portal that is blocked from public view and no examples or discussion of its contents could be located during the research.
  • In an effort to locate any relevant information, our team analyzed the following sources: company's official website, press releases, trusted media sites, employee review sites, company reports (e.g. CSR report), and agency case studies, social media. Across these sources we looked for things like employee social media groups, complaints or praises from employees about company's handling of internal communications, press releases or announcements/insight from the company wherein they discuss how they communicated a certain thing to employees, new articles that discuss how certain things were communicated to employees, visuals and how-to guides for using the employee portal, visuals or examples of Iberostar employee handbooks, case studies reported by agencies that may have helped Iberostar with their internal communications, etc. However, across all these research paths, very little information was obtained.
