Early Findings
PetFirst Pet Insurance and MetLife
These two US-based insurance companies offer pet insurance that covers veterinary cost coverage based on
owner reimbursement
. One can "
use any licensed veterinarian
, clinic, emergency animal hospital, or specialist in the United States" as needed by the pet but the owner has to pay for these first. Then upon submission of the claim or invoice, the insurance company will give the reimbursement in
less than two weeks
.
Most pet health insurance companies also use the
reimbursement
method.
The pet insurance under
MetLife
is issued by the
Independence American Insurance Company
.
GEICO
GEICO Insurance Agency partnered with
Embrace Pet Insurance
to provide comprehensive cat and dog insurance. This insurance offers coverage for
accidents
, non-preexisting illnesses, cancer, dental issues, and more. One can go to any licensed veterinarian and this insurance company will reimburse up to
90% of the vet bill
.
Progressive Pet Insurance by Pets Best
This pet insurance offers coverage that can be
customized
according to one's budget and pet needs. The different types of plans offered are
BestBenefit Accident and Illness Plan
which covers accidents and illnesses, Accident Only Plan which covers
accidental injuries
, and the Wellness Routine Care Plan which
covers preventative care
.
One also gets to choose the percentage (
70%, 80%, or 90%
) of vet bill reimbursement that will be received.
Summary of Findings
We have provided different pet insurance companies that offer veterinary cost coverage. All of these companies offer a reimbursement method. We have not seen any pet insurance company that offers otherwise. This tells us that pet insurance is really offered like property insurance rather than health insurance.
Investopedia
also confirms that pet insurance really does function more like property insurance rather than health insurance. This is believed to be beneficial for the policyholder.
