Dentists and dental hygienists

Salary

  • General dentists in private practice earned an average net income of $190,440 in 2018, while those who are specialists earned $330,180.
  • The median annual net income for new dentists in private practice (graduated 2015 – 2017) who are general practitioners is $150,000. Based on the 2019 Survey of Dental Practice, 50% of them earned $98,000 — $180,000 annually.
  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental hygienists earned $35.97 per hour as the national median in 2018 while dental assistants earned $18.59.
  • General practitioners who are owners of a private practice had an average gross billings of $717,350 in 2018 while specialists had $1,016,080.
  • It is estimated that an entry level dentist earns $119,063 on average annually, a mid-level dentist earns $136,676 and a senior dentist earns $149,480.

Dental practice

  • According to the 2019 Dental Economics–Levin Group Annual Practice Survey, the total dental private practice in the U.S. had a revenue $1,193,934 in 2019, which was an 11.4% increase when compared with 2018.
  • Based on the responses to the survey, the "average responding practice had 1.7 dentists and 1.6 hygienists".
