There are several wireless communication technologies currently on the market. Below are some of the most popular technologies and how they perform through over distances and through the earth and metals:

Cellular Technology

The cellular technology which comprises of the 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, and the most recent 5G is one of the most popular and widely available wireless technology on the market. Cellular technologies below the 6GHz such as the 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies are least distorted by earth and metals.

As a rule of thumb, the lower the frequency, the higher its pentration power, but also the lower the bandwith or size of data it can transmit per time. Cellular technologies can travel well over 10 kilometers before sufferring from any visibile degredation.

WiMax Technology

The Wimax technology is capable of reaching farther distance than the cellular technology, but it does not pass through walls quite as easily. The technology can achieve range or coverage up to 50 kilometer radius from base station, and carry data at the rate of 70 megabits per second. The Wimax technology does not require a line of sight between the sender and the receiver.
