Minority Groups in Hong Kong

Goals

To provide an overview of the minority groups in Hong Kong, including: the different types of minority groups (racial, ethnic, sexual, religious etc); challenges they face and their need areas; government policies or measures that are addressing their challenges and the effectiveness of these government measures or policies; and global best practices in understanding and tackling minority groups' challenges.

Early Findings

Minority groups in Hong Kong include: ethnic minorities, recent immigrants from Mainland China, people living with disabilities, and sexual minorities.

Ethnic Minorities in Hong Kong

  • Ethnic minorities in Hong Kong refer to persons of non-Chinese ethnicity.
  • From the 2016 Population By-census, there were a total of 584,383 ethnic minorities residing in Hong Kong in 2016, making up 8% of the Hong Kong population.
  • Foreign domestic helpers made up more than half of the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, and were predominantly female at 99%.
  • The number of ethnic minorities was 263,593, excluding foreign domestic helpers, making up 3.6% of the Hong Kong population.
  • About 80% of all ethnic minorities in Hong Kong in 2016 were Asians (other than Chinese) with the majority of them being Filipinos, 31.5%; Indonesians, 26.2%, and South Asians, 14.5%. 10.0% of the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong were Whites.
  • The median age of ethnic minorities was 36.3, which was about 7.2 years lower than that of the whole population of 43.4.
